ReActiv8 Procedure
What Is A ReActiv8 Procedure?
ReActiv8 is an implantable restorative neurostimulation system designed to treat chronic low back pain caused by dysfunction of the multifidus muscles, which help stabilize the spine. The system delivers mild electrical stimulation to the nerves that control these muscles, helping restore muscle function, improve spinal stability, and reduce pain over time. Unlike treatments that simply mask pain, ReActiv8 is intended to address an underlying cause of chronic mechanical low back pain. The device is implanted during a minimally invasive outpatient procedure and is typically recommended for patients who have not found sufficient relief from conservative therapies such as medications, injections, or physical therapy.
- Preparation: The patient is positioned comfortably, and anesthesia or sedation is administered. The lower back area is cleaned and sterilized.
- Imaging Guidance: Using fluoroscopy (real-time X-ray imaging), the physician identifies the nerves that control the multifidus muscles.
- Lead Placement: Small electrical leads are implanted near the medial branch nerves responsible for activating the multifidus muscles.
- Pulse Generator Implantation: A small pulse generator device is implanted under the skin, typically in the lower back or upper buttock area.
- Device Connection: The leads are connected to the implanted generator.
- Testing and Programming: The system is tested to confirm proper stimulation, and customized settings are programmed for the patient.
- Completion: The incisions are closed and bandaged, and the patient is monitored briefly before discharge.
Patients typically use the device during scheduled therapy sessions each day as prescribed by their physician.
- Infection at the implant or incision site
- Bleeding or bruising after the procedure
- Temporary pain or discomfort at the implant location
- Lead movement or device malfunction requiring adjustment or revision
- Nerve irritation or stimulation-related discomfort
- Allergic reaction to implanted materials or medications used during the procedure
- Incomplete pain relief or lack of symptom improvement
- Rare risks associated with anesthesia or surgery
Most complications are uncommon and manageable when the procedure is performed by an experienced provider.
- Targets an underlying cause of chronic low back pain rather than only masking symptoms
- Helps restore function of the multifidus muscles that support spinal stability
- May reduce chronic pain and improve mobility and daily function
- Can decrease reliance on pain medications, including opioids
- Minimally invasive outpatient procedure
- Provides a non-fusion, non-opioid treatment option
- Designed for long-term therapy and ongoing pain management
- Clinically shown to improve quality of life in appropriately selected patients
- Avoid heavy lifting for several weeks after implantation
- Limit bending, twisting, and strenuous spinal movements during recovery
- Avoid high-impact activities or intense exercise until cleared by your physician
- Do not drive for at least 24 hours after the procedure or while taking pain medications
- Avoid soaking the incision site in pools, hot tubs, or baths until fully healed
- Follow all activity restrictions and wound care instructions provided by your doctor
- Attend all follow-up visits for device monitoring and programming adjustments
Most patients gradually return to normal activities as healing progresses and therapy continues.
